Salary:

Range £40,617.85 to £40,617.85

 

Shift Work:

  • Monday to Friday 7am to 3pm
  • Sunday to Thursday 11pm to 7am
  • Monday to Friday 3pm to 11pm

 

Job Purpose

 

British Sugar is the UK’s leading sugar producer and the only company that processes the entire sugar beet crop grown in the UK. In partnership with over 2,300 growers, we produce approximately 1.2 million tonnes of sugar each year, operating across multiple manufacturing sites in East Anglia and the East Midlands. We are pleased to offer an exciting opportunity for a Production Operative/Stand-in Shift Manager to join one of Europe’s leading icing sugar manufacturers at our Bury St Edmunds Icing Sugar Milling Plant.

 

In this role, you will be part of a skilled and culturally diverse team, contributing to a collaborative and inclusive working environment. You will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of multiple sugar production lines, Supporting the Shift Manager in day-to-day operations alongside operating a Milling plant production line, and proactively identifying opportunities for continuous improvement. Your focus will support enhanced performance in Health & Safety, product quality, and operational efficiency.

 

To be an active member of the production team, ensuring that you comply with all the site procedures. Maintaining the safe operation of site packing lines and warehouse to manufacture effectively and efficiently, store and despatch sugar products which meet all quality standards and customer expectations.  Supporting the Shift Manager in day-to-day operations alongside operating a Milling plant production line.

Core Accountabilities

  • Responsible for the operation of a packing line, conducting start-up checks, product testing, as well as end of shift checks.  
  • Accurately record all due diligence and other operational data as required.  
  • Operate the lines CCP’s and ensure compliance to the frequency of checks and recording.  
  • To comply with site and business operational, health, safety & environmental and food safety procedures, work instructions and safe systems of work.  
  • To carry out basic fault finding and problem solving, working with shift engineers to resolve.  
  • Ensure the production and despatch plans are met, to service customer requirements.  
  • Escalate issues in a timely manner to Supervisor/Line Manager.  
  • Providing holiday and absence cover for the Shift Manager
  • Demonstrate to auditors (internal & external) as well as customers the food safe manufacture of finished products.  
  • Proactive approach in identification, communication, and achievement of continuous improvement.  
  • Maintaining housekeeping standards ensuring no food safety risk.

Skills, Knowledge & Competencies

  • Experience working within a FMCG environment, preferably food.  
  • Experience of operating food packaging machinery - bag in box / form & fill / bag & stitch.
  • Experienced in managing a team.
  • Awareness of HACCP and GMP practices.  
  • Good communication skills including the accurate, legible recording of information. 

 

The following are desirable but not essential as full training will be provided if required in role.

  • Manual Handling Training
  • Counterbalance forklift licence
